Interview With The Author: Christopher Rice

by

John Dwaine McKenna

Best-selling author and TV producer Christopher Rice is a busy, busy man who graciously took time out of a frenetic schedule to sit for a brief interview.  With many thanks . . . here is himself.

Why do you write?

Because I have an abiding contempt for reality.

Where do you write?

The key to not destroying your posture as a writer is to maintain multiple writing stations and alternate throughout the day. Desk, easy chair (with lap desk), card table – those are the three in a nutshell.

What time of day do you write?

My best writing happens first thing in the morning during that first rush of caffeine.

Do you plot-outline or wing it?

I outline up to a certain point, to that moment when I feel like the story’s reached critical mass inside my head. But I always give permission to abandon the outline and take wild turns if that’s what the process asks of me.

What makes a character despicable?

An inability to view their actions in a healthy or accurate way.

What type of scene is most difficult for you to write?

Any scene that’s low on dialogue is a challenge. I love to let my characters talk, but sometimes you have to advance the story in other ways.

Are you more comfortable writing in the first, or third person POV?

I’m a third person addict, and have a distinct first person allergy. I love the experience of depicting multiple points of view that give a fuller picture to the reader than the characters themselves are privy to.

Do you have any other comments, suggestions, tips, anecdotes, quotes or inspirational material you’d like to share?

“Write the book you want to read,” Anne Rice

“Don’t try to write the entire book in one day,” Christopher Rice
